As a result of its cationic character, CS is able to react with polyanions giving rise to polyelectrolyte complexes. CS has found pronounced application in multiparticulate drug delivery and it enhances the dissolution of drugs having poor solubility. CS microspheres can be prepared by chemical denaturation process, ion induced coagulation and spray drying methods. This review aims to compile the various application of CS in microspheres based drug delivery. This review also aims to include the process variables factors that affect the release of drugs from the microspheres.

Formulation and In Vitro Evaluation of Acyclovir Mucoadhesive Microspheres for Intravaginal Application

The purpose of the research was to formulate microspheres of acyclovir (ACV) using mucoadhesive polymers, sodium alginate and chitosan. Calcium chloride was used as the ionotropic gelling agent. Sodium alginate was crosslinked by calcium chloride leading to a slower release of the drug. Chitosan which is a cationic polymer interacted with sodium alginate, an anionic polymer, to form an interpol...

Chemotherapeutic potential of alginate-chitosan microspheres as anti-tubercular drug carriers.

OBJECTIVES This study was designed to develop alginate-chitosan microspheres as drug carriers to reduce dose/dosing frequency in the management of tuberculosis (TB), which otherwise demands prolonged chemotherapy. METHODS Alginate-chitosan microspheres encapsulating three frontline anti-tuberculous drugs (ATDs), rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide, were formulated. A therapeutic dose and a...

Preparation and Characterization of Quaternized Chitosan Coated Alginate Microspheres for Blue Dextran Delivery

In this study, 2-[(Acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride was graft polymerized onto chitosan (CS) to form quaternary ammonium CS (QAC) by using ammonium persulfate as a redox initiator. Alginate (ALG) microspheres loaded with a water-soluble macromolecular model drug, blue dextran (BD), were obtained by corporation of coaxial gas-flow method and ionic gelation process. CS and QAC were th...
